FOOTHILL FOCUS Number 9 OCTOBER 2008 Volume 16 STRESS BUSTERS- 40 Days with the Shepherd A FRESH LOOK AT PSALM 23 Join us on an exciting adventure, a 40-day journey with the Great Shepherd. "Life is filled with stress. This is not a secret. We feel the pressure of family life and work demands. We must deal with health issues and financial difficulties. We struggle with our own internal fears. Jesus said that he came so that we an experience life to the full (John 10.10). But how to experience that life often seems like a secret we haven't discovered. The good news is that God wants to pour his supernatural life into your life. Better still, God's ways for filling your life are not secrets. King David certainly knew these ways. In the Psalms, David proclaims the joy, peace, strength, courage, confidence, and fresh starts God has filled his life with. David also honestly shares the price he paid when he stopped following God's ways. Is it possible for us to learn these ways and come to know God as personally and deeply as David knew God? Yes! In Psalm 23, David gives us an incredible picture of what following the ways God look and feel like." Join your sisters and brothers at Foothill Covenant in learning more about the life that David described by walking in it together for 40-days -- in Sunday worship, in individual times of reflection, and in small groups. We begin in a few weeks on Sunday, October 12th. Plan to join us! VISION TO ACTION What's happening on our vision teams. There continues to be a feeling that we are beingtransformed even as we seek ways to be agents of transformation in our communities. Here's what's happening Community Connections: In mid-September, the CommunityConnections team met to evaluate the BBQ and the other hospitality events of the past year and chart a course for the coming year. There is a developing sense that more bridge events maybe strategic, especially to take advantage of the presence of manyyoung couples and families that have been gathering at Foothillover the past couple years. If you would like to join the team, please talk to Mark Liedstrand, team leader. Mentor/Tutors: Soon those from Foothill who tutor and mentor will be reconnecting withtheir students or being assigned new students. Some will tutor at elementary and middleschools in Mountain View and Los Altos and others will mentor students mostly at MountainView and Alta Vista High Schools. If you are interested in ministering to the needs of ourcommunity in this way, call Pastor Jim and he'll help get you started. CHRISTMAS CARING PROJECT 2007To the families that blessed ours, We would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all the gifts that your family blessed our family with this Christmas. Everything has come in handy for us. We feel really blessed that there are people out there that take the time to make sure that other families have a good Christmas. Our son was born when the delivery came in and when we came home from the hospital, I couldn't believe how much had been delivered. I started crying. We truly feel that God worked in our lives this year and with our continuing faith we know he will continue to work in our lives. We have been blessed with so much stuff. And, we want to thank you. SYMPATHY It was with great sadness that we learned of the recent death of Foothill Covenant's second lead pastor, John Bergman, who served us from 1969-1982. A memorial service was held for John on September 15th at Newport Covenant Church in Bellevue, Washington. This was the church to which John went after serving at Foothill. If you wish to write to John's widow, Nina, or to his daughter, Amy, see the addresses below.
