Discovering Our True Selves

in Christ

In an Ash Wednesday devotional, Frederick Buechner writes,"In many cultures there is an ancient custom of giving a tenth of each year's income to some holy use. For Christians, to observe the forty days of Lent is to do the same thing with roughly a tenth of each year's days. After being baptized by John in the River Jordan, Jesus went off alone into the wilderness where he spent forty days asking himself what it meant to be Jesus. During Lent, Christians are supposed to ask one way or another what it means to be themselves." I would add "...themselves (in Christ.)"

As Paul taught about the Christian life to the young Christians in the churches he had planted, he often used the phrase "in Christ" to describe the substance and quality of the new life that they had entered. I would like to invite you during the coming Lenten season to use this lens as we look at Jesus' life as he approaches Jerusalem and his death and resurrection. What do we find out about Jesus and ourselves as we, not just look at, but enter into Jesus' life.

You may want to simply sit with each of these scriptures for a week at a time or you may want to take one of the Lenten devotionals that you'll find on the lobby tables to help you in your journey.

Come find your true self in Christ.

We will have our last conversation on March 1st at 6:30 p.m. in the Fireside Room. We anticipate that some time in the following month, we will have a Congregational Meeting atwhich a finished draft of the by-laws will be read into the minutes for later action in August. The Executive Committee has decided that we will follow the current constitution literally, waiting one year from presentation of the constitution to the vote, and so we will not vote onthe constitution and by-laws until an extra mid-August Congregational Meeting.
